Wattstax, the legendary 1972 benefit concert organized by Stax Records to mark the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots, drew over 100,000 people to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for a day of soul, funk, and gospel with performances by Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, and more. The event inspired a best-selling soundtrack and the acclaimed 1973 documentary Wattstax, now preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry.
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Stax reissues Wattstax: The Living Word, featuring highlights from this historic festival.
