Recorded in 1979 and broadcast on radio three years later, this Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers show catches the future Free Fallin' hitmaker and his original backing band on the cusp of greatness. Not long before the release of his breakthrough third album, Damn The Torpedoes, and - legend has it - just weeks away from undergoing a tonsillectomy, Petty led his crew through highlights from their first two albums, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (Breakdown, Fooled Again (I Don't Like It)) and You're Gonna Get It! (the title track), plus, among other songs, a brace of blues covers (Route 66, I'm A King Bee) that established the up-and-coming star as an old hand at the Americana stylings he would refine throughout his career.
Within striking distance of fame, it's shows like this that lit the touchpaper for Petty's explosion onto the mainstream.
