The Mars Volta’s 2002 debut EP, Tremulant, marked a bold new start for Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala after At The Drive-In’s breakup. In just three tracks, it set the stage for their future by rejecting their old post-hardcore crowd and embracing a visionary sound blending Caribbean and Latin rhythms with experimental rock. Featuring staccato guitars, organ, inventive sound effects, and Cedric’s expanded vocal style—including Spanish lyrics—Tremulant established the band’s ambitious, genre-defying identity from the start.
