Originally released in 1971 as two edited volumes by Shandar, Sun Ra’s Nuits de la Fondation Maeght concerts are now reissued by Strut in an expanded 6-LP box set for Record Store Day 2025. Housed in a hardboard box, it includes a reprint of the original festival program, a 12-page booklet with liner notes, and restored photos by Philippe Gras. Recorded over two nights in August 1970, these were Sun Ra and the Arkestra’s first European performances, part of a festival alongside Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor. Set at the Fondation Maeght art gallery in Provence, the shows featured a powerful lineup and a dazzling multimedia spectacle that stunned audiences, blending music, film projections, dancers, and symbolic imagery.
