Scritti Politti’s third album, Provision, returns to CD and vinyl after a long absence, featuring new sleeve notes from Green Gartside and David Gamson. Originally released in 1988, the album saw the duo push the boundaries of analogue recording, painstakingly assembling individual performances using magnetic tape and razor blades to achieve their distinctive sound.
The album features contributions from Roger Troutman, Dan Huff and Miles Davis, whose trumpet appears on ‘Oh Patti (Don't Feel Sorry For Loverboy)’. Tracks including ‘Boom! There She Was’, ‘Sugar And Spice’ and ‘Overnight’ showcase the album’s sophisticated arrangements and melodic songwriting, while the collaboration with Davis remains a standout moment.
Often overshadowed by the success of its predecessor, Cupid & Psyche 85, Provision is now recognised as an ambitious and forward-thinking record. This reissue restores the original formats and tracklists, with the nine-track album on vinyl and two additional tracks on CD: a dub of ‘Boom! There She Was’ and an extended version of ‘Oh Patti’.
