With Spoon and Rafter, Mojave 3 took another creative leap, expanding beyond their alt-country roots with electronics, glockenspiel, melodica, and richly layered pop arrangements. Inspired by the adventurous studio experimentation of bands like The Beach Boys, the album embraced a fuller, more colourful sound.

Recorded at the band's studio in Cornwall, the album made extensive use of early Pro Tools editing, allowing more ambitious compositions such as “Bluebird of Happiness,” which stitched together multiple separately recorded sections. Band members have since described it as one of their most inventive and rewarding records.

Its melodic, accessible sound also earned Mojave 3 rare mainstream exposure, with “Bluebird of Happiness” and “Bill Oddity” both appearing in episodes of the TV show The O.C. in 2003.
