Recorded at London’s Fortress Studios with producer Mark Van Hoen, Excuses for Travellers finds Mojave 3 refining the sounds of their earlier records into a cohesive and deeply atmospheric whole. Blending the intimacy of Ask Me Tomorrow with the Americana influences of Out of Tune, the album showcases a more mature and confident songwriting approach.
Built around understated arrangements of guitar, pedal steel, piano, horns, and drums, the record places Neil Halstead’s vocals and lyrics at the forefront on highlights such as “In Love with a View,” “My Life in Art,” and “She Broke You So Softly.” It also features rare sole songwriting contributions from Rachel Goswell (“Bringin’ Me Home”) and Ian McCutcheon (“Got My Sunshine”).
Often viewed as the midpoint of Mojave 3’s evolving sound, Excuses for Travellers balances melancholy, warmth, and understated beauty while highlighting Halstead’s growth as a lyricist and songwriter.
