Their first Fire Records release, Horror features songs written in late 2022 that eerily reflect today’s world. The album tackles British imperialism’s legacy with lyrics woven into a rich mix of dub, country, noise, rock, electronica, punk, music hall, polka, and even waltz. Drawing from their global journey—from Leeds to California and Siberia—the Mekons create a sound reminiscent of The Chills and early R.E.M. Highlights include “Mudcrawlers,” featuring Jon Langford on vocals about Irish famine and refugees, the sharp and defiant “War Economy,” and Rico’s haunting “Fallen Leaves,” a Celtic-infused climate breakdown lament with Susie Honeyman’s violin. Nearly 50 years in, the Mekons—Langford, Timms, Greenhalgh, Trumfio, Honeyman, Bell, Goulding, and Edmonds—continue to blend sound and sentiment with masterful craft.
