Lloyd Cole and The Commotions—formed in Glasgow in 1982 while Cole studied Philosophy and English—stood out in the 80s with melodic, guitar-driven pop rich in literary references. Signed to Polydor, they released their debut single Perfect Skin in 1984, followed by the acclaimed album Rattlesnakes, produced by Paul Hardiman with strings by Anne Dudley. Featuring singles like Forest Fire and Rattlesnakes, the band became music press favourites, blending sharp cultural allusions with catchy, intelligent pop.
