Bringing together Josephine Foster and the Victor Herrero Band’s two Spanish albums, Anda Jaleo / Perlas celebrates the enduring power of traditional Spanish folk music. Anda Jaleo, originally released in 2010, features live acoustic arrangements of Federico García Lorca’s Las Canciones Populares Españolas, a collection censored under Franco’s dictatorship. Inspired by Lorca and La Argentinita’s 1931 recordings, Foster and Herrero bring these songs vividly to life, with this edition adding a previously unreleased interpretation of “Sones de Asturias.”
Its companion, Perlas (Pearls), gathers songs and poems selected by Foster from traditional Spanish sources, including Castile, the Basque Country, Santander and the Costa Brava. Recorded live to analogue tape in Spain, its warm performances use strings and simple percussion to give timeless melodies a fresh, intimate and deeply human quality.
