Mingus, Joni Mitchell’s tenth studio album, was released on June 13, 1979, as her final project for Asylum Records. A tribute to and collaboration with jazz legend Charles Mingus, it was completed shortly before and after his death. One of her most experimental, jazz-focused works, the album features three lyrical adaptations of Mingus compositions, two original Mitchell songs, a version of “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” with her lyrics, and five spoken word interludes.
