John Cale was critical of his 1970 solo debut Vintage Violence, feeling it masked his true personality. His distinctive style fully emerged on his next two Reprise albums: the experimental The Academy in Peril (1972) and the accessible, anxious Paris 1919 (1973). This reissue pairs both albums, remastered from original tapes with unreleased outtakes and liner notes by Grayson Haver Currin, highlighting Cale’s fearless artistry in his late 20s.
