Though James only found fame a decade into their career with Sit Down, they repaid that attention with a creative peak that still feels magical. Seven explored grand, Waterboys-style “Big Music,” while 1993’s Laid—produced by Brian Eno—pulled things inward again. Eno kept their rock excess in check, guiding them toward the sublime Sometimes (Lester Piggott), a one-chord, all-night jam of sixty acoustic guitars, spiritual fervour, and a final, transcendent choir. Proof that James touched the divine when few bands ever do.
