The House of Love—guitarist and vocalist Guy Chadwick, lead guitarist Terry Bickers, bassist Chris Groothuizen, and drummer Pete Evans—formed in London in 1986. Although Chadwick had been involved in the music industry for several years, it was seeing The Jesus and Mary Chain that energized and inspired him to form the band. After signing with Creation Records, The House of Love received enthusiastic acclaim from the music press, with their single Shine On and self-titled debut album becoming indie classics. By 1989, the band had gained significant attention and signed with Fontana, part of the PolyGram group.
