The House of Love—guitarist and vocalist Guy Chadwick, lead guitarist Terry Bickers, bassist Chris Groothuizen, and drummer Pete Evans—formed in London in 1986. Chadwick, already familiar with the music industry, was inspired to start the band after seeing The Jesus and Mary Chain. Signing with Creation Records, they quickly gained enthusiastic support from the music press, with their single Shine On and self-titled debut album becoming indie classics. By 1989, the band had grown in prominence and signed with Fontana, part of the PolyGram group.
