Following his debut Takin' Off, Herbie Hancock delivered a confident album featuring an eclectic lineup including Donald Byrd, Grachan Moncur III, Hank Mobley, Grant Green, Chuck Israels, and Tony Williams. The group sounds tight and cohesive, with Williams driving the rhythm and Hancock’s concise, lyrical solos hinting at his future, more impressionistic style. Despite his youth, Hancock’s genius shines through.
