Over their first decade, Deafheaven blended black metal’s intensity with shoegaze’s lush soundscapes. On their fifth album, Infinite Granite, they take a bold step away from harshness toward a refined, vibrant sound filled with style and beauty. Vocalist George Clarke explores falsettos, whispers, and harmonies, minimizing his usual black metal screams. Guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra add synth textures to their astral guitar work, while drummer Daniel Tracy and bassist Christopher Johnson provide a solid rhythmic foundation. Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen with engineering by Jack Shirley and Darrell Thorp, Infinite Granite is Deafheaven’s most emotionally powerful and polished album yet.
