Denied the rights to use 1984 as an album title, Bowie drew on Orwell’s novel to create Diamond Dogs. Backed by a small band and playing multiple instruments himself, Bowie crafted a dystopian, apocalyptic sound reminiscent of Ziggy Stardust. Highlights include the Isaac Hayes-inspired “1984,” the glam rock anthem “Rebel Rebel,” and the optimistic, rootsy “Rock ’n’ Roll With Me,” which hinted at his upcoming soul phase. Though not as strong as Ziggy, the album remains a memorable classic.
