The Scholars is a concept album set at the fictional Parnassus University, exploring themes of life, death, and rebirth through characters like the tortured playwright Beolco and the spiritually lost Devereaux. Inspired by a poem and classic literature, the album's two parts contrast the clash between traditional academic defenders and rebellious youth. Musically drawing from rock operas like Tommy and Ziggy Stardust, each song is crafted to showcase individual characters. Self-produced by Will Toledo with analog recording, the album blends expansive tracks like the 19-minute "Planet Desperation" with catchy, short tunes like "The Catastrophe." The Scholars marks a turning point for Car Seat Headrest, evolving from a solo project to a fully cohesive band effort, creating a rich and immersive experience for listeners.
