Wafting through our speakers like the heat haze shimmering above the deserts of California's dusty plains, Brigid Dawson's commanding ballads melt American roots music into sludgy, yet punchy, misty-eyed hallucinations.
Lovely though it may seem from a distance, the striation of loss quicksilvered throughout provides weighty balance to her contralto lilt. Those familiar with her harmonic counterpoint from her time in Thee Oh Sees/OCS know she can belt as well as lullaby but there’s a fresh and smoulderingly heavy swing in her step on display here. The record features friends from Eddy Current, Sic Alps, The Fresh & Onlys, Sunwatchers &, naturally, Oh Sees. The results are spellbinding.
