Bright Eyes’ new EP Kids Table expands on the world of 2024’s Five Dice, All Threes, gathering songs from the same sessions that didn’t fit the album’s cohesion. Named after its board-game-inspired cover, the record embodies the band’s signature tension between hope and despair.
Highlights include collaborations with Alynda Segarra of Hurray For The Riff Raff, the ska-inflected “1st World Blues,” and sharp cultural references woven through tracks like “Victory City” and “Shakespeare in a Nutshell.” At its core is a moving cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Sharp Cutting Wings,” the first song Conor Oberst sang after recovering from vocal issues—a fitting centerpiece that ties together this eclectic, bittersweet collection.
