Alice Coltrane, legendary pianist, composer, and spiritual leader, faced profound loss after the death of her husband John Coltrane in 1967. Her ensuing period of intense suffering, which she called tapas, led her to Indian guru Swami Satchidananda and ultimately a life as a spiritual teacher. Settling in California, she founded the Shanti Anantam Ashram and used music as the foundation of her spiritual practice. Between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, she self-released four cassette albums blending Detroit gospel, Indian devotional music, and her own vocals—her most obscure yet deeply soulful work, originally available only through the ashram.
