Long March Through the Jazz Age is the final album from Chris Bailey and The Saints—a powerful farewell from a restless, uncompromising lyricist. Recorded in late 2018 in Sydney with longtime drummer Pete Wilkinson, guitarist/engineer Sean Carey, Davey Lane, and a handpicked ensemble of young players, the record expands Bailey’s rough demos into a poignant portrait of modern life.
Opening with the anthemic “Empires (Sometimes We Fall),” the album blends Bailey’s punk spirit with spacious, dynamic production. Highlights include the string-rich melancholy of “Judas,” the Stones-tinged swagger of “Gasoline,” and the reflective “Bruises.” Dylan-esque flashes and the haunting title track—with its striking trumpet break—underscore the album’s emotional depth.
