Chelsea Wolfe’s fifth album, Abyss, confronts her lifelong sleep paralysis by exploring the blurred line between dreams and reality. Building on the dark, intimate tones of her earlier work, she crafts a haunting, subconscious soundscape described as a “hazy afterlife” and “inverted thunderstorm.”
Recorded with collaborators Ben Chisholm, Dylan Fujioka, and others, and produced by John Congleton, the album embraces imperfection and human fragility, inspired by Yohji Yamamoto’s idea that “perfection is ugly.” Abyss captures Wolfe’s tension between escape and unrest, cementing her as a uniquely compelling artist.
