In the Pines was a bold, unexpected move for The Triffids, recorded in the outback with a raw, intimate energy. Balancing desolate, gothic folk tracks like the title song and Kathy Knows with joyful moments like the rowdy cover of Bill Anderson’s Once a Day, the album has been compared to Dylan and The Band’s The Basement Tapes for its spirit and songwriting. The CD reissue adds tracks later used on Calenture (Trick of the Light, Blinder by the Hour, Jerdacuttup Man) plus two additional songs (She’s Sure the Girl I Love, Wish to See No More).
