After leaving The Spencer Davis Group, Steve Winwood formed Traffic in Birmingham in April 1967 with Jim Capaldi, Dave Mason, and Chris Wood. Starting as a psychedelic rock band, Traffic expanded their sound with keyboards, sitar, and jazz improvisation. Their debut album, Mr. Fantasy, released in December 1967 on Island Records, was praised by Rolling Stone as “one of the best from any contemporary group” and remains a classic on best-of lists.
