Almost two years before reuniting, Van der Graaf Generator’s four members had discussed getting back together. After Peter Hammill’s 2003 heart attack, the reunion became urgent. Their 2005 Leverkusen Jazzfestival concert—filmed and recorded for the first time in the band’s history—was the reunion tour’s climax. The show captured the band’s powerful, dark energy reminiscent of their 70s peak, with Hammill’s emotive vocals strong as ever. The concert reflects the deep friendship and connection between band and fans, though the reunion was marred soon after by David Jackson’s falling-out with the group. Jackson calls this recording “a show you won’t get again” from that lineup.
