John Frusciante’s The Empyrean stands as one of the guitarist’s most expansive and personal solo works, moving between experimental rock, ambient soundscapes and melodic songwriting. Originally released in 2009, the album features appearances from Flea and Johnny Marr, adding further depth to its richly layered arrangements.
Best known for his work with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frusciante has built a prolific solo catalogue spanning everything from psych-rock and electronica to more abstract and atmospheric material. Alongside his solo releases, he has collaborated with artists including The Mars Volta, Johnny Cash, Duran Duran, Wu-Tang Clan and Omar Rodríguez-López.
The Empyrean remains a key release in Frusciante’s discography, capturing his more exploratory instincts while retaining the melodic sensibility that runs throughout his work.
