Kamasi Washington’s highly anticipated second album, Heaven and Earth, follows his debut The Epic. Split into two halves, it explores the tension between everyday realities and cosmic themes, reflecting on global chaos and visions for the future. Recorded with his band The Next Step and members of The West Coast Get Down at Los Angeles’ Henson Studios, the 16-track album features compositions by Washington, new arrangements of jazz legend Freddie Hubbard’s Hubtones, and contributions from artists like Thundercat and Terrace Martin. Spanning over two and a half hours, Heaven and Earth reflects Washington’s idea that reality is shaped by consciousness, with the Earth side showing the external world and the Heaven side the internal.
