The The's Soul Mining (1983) began as sessions in New York with producer Mike Thorne before being reworked under CBS Records at John Foxx's Garden Studios, co-produced by Matt Johnson and Paul Hardiman. Featuring contributions from JG Thirwell, Zeke Manyika, Thomas Leer, and Jools Holland, the album aimed for a cinematic sound beyond the standard rock setup. With artwork by Johnson’s brother Andy Dog and a striking visual aesthetic, Soul Mining stood apart from 1983’s synth-pop scene, blending accessible pop with experimental, high-art ambition and politically charged themes.
