On their final 1982 album The Gift, Weller moved The Jam beyond punk into R&B and Motown-inspired sounds, showcased in hits like “Town Called Malice.” The record blends disco vibes (“Precious”), mod-punk roots (“Just Who Is The Five O’Clock Hero”), an instrumental (“Circus”), and catchy tracks like “Happy Together” and “Ghosts.” Experimental touches appear in the dancey “Trans-global Express” and steel drums on “Planner’s Dream Gone Wrong.”
