In June 1978, Bernie Wilcox and Geoff Brown approached Chris Hewitt to help with the Northern Carnival Against Racism Concert in Manchester. With Hewitt already having equipment booked for the Deeply Vale Festival, they decided to use the same gear, saving costs. Just days before the event, they completed the stage in Alexandra Park, where Graham Parker and The Rumour rehearsed before their big performance. Buzzcocks played the following Saturday, delivering a free concert that was described as a people’s celebration. Pete Shelley later commented on the fun and political nature of the event, while Paul Morley praised Buzzcocks for their emphasis on entertainment.
