Formed in early 1980s Keighley, West Yorkshire, Skeletal Family took their name from a David Bowie song. Emerging alongside goth pioneers like The Sisters of Mercy and The March Violets, they became key figures in the goth subculture. The band gained UK indie chart success, toured extensively, recorded Peel Sessions, and supported The Sisters of Mercy on their 1984 tour. They released two albums, Burning Oil (1984) and Futile Combat (1985), featuring their hit single "Promised Land." Anne-Marie left in 1985 to form Ghost Dance with former Sisters guitarist Gary Marx.
