Hey Clockface was recorded in Helsinki, Paris, and New York, and mixed by Sebastian Krys in Los Angeles. After solo sessions in Helsinki with engineer Eetü Seppälä in February 2020, Elvis Costello recorded nine songs over two days in Paris, singing live and capturing spontaneous performances. He described it as a dream session. Produced by Costello and Krys, the album follows their Grammy-winning collaboration on Look Now. The video for "We Are All Cowards Now" by Eamon Singer and Arlo McFurlow features striking imagery of conflict and contrast.
