Porcupine, the band’s third album released in February 1983, became their highest-charting UK release, reaching No. 2. Recorded in studios across London, Wales, and Liverpool, it was produced by Ian Broudie (credited as "Kingbird"). Initially rejected by Warner Bros for being “too dark,” the band re-recorded it with added strings by Shankar for a brighter, more polished sound. The album includes their first Top 10 single, “The Cutter.” Porcupine bridges the rawness of Heaven Up Here and the lushness of Ocean Rain, showcasing the band’s growing musical sophistication while maintaining their signature mysterious vibe.
