Sleaford Mods have released a gritty new cover of the Pet Shop Boys’ 1986 classic “West End Girls,” with all profits going to the homeless charity Shelter. Made between tours for UK GRIM, the rendition was approved by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—who were inspired to create their own remix for the limited-edition single. Additional remixes come from Hifi Sean and Sleaford Mods’ Andrew Fearn under his Extnddntwrk alias. Long influenced by the Pet Shop Boys’ minimalist electronic style, the duo deliver a rougher, synth-sharpened version that reflects today’s social disconnection while honouring the original’s critique of Thatcher-era Britain. “It’s a song very close to my heart,” says Fearn.
