Strut Records presents the official reissue of Hidden Fire Volumes 1 & 2, Sun Ra’s final album on his El Saturn label, recorded live over three nights at New York’s Knitting Factory in 1988. Originally issued in tiny quantities with handmade packaging, these elusive recordings explore darker, more dissonant terrain, with Ra on Yamaha DX7 synthesiser, a rare string section, and the haunting vocals of Art Jenkins.
Tracks like “Retrospect / This World Is Not My Home,” “Hidden Fire Improvisation,” and “My Brothers The Wind And Sun #9” showcase fire-breathing solos, warped blues, and string-driven chaos, revealing a Sun Ra focused less on cosmic swing and more on conjuring portals to the unknown.
