'Thelonious Alone in San Francisco' marks Monk's third solo piano album. Although he generally performed and recorded in a quartet format (with tenor saxophone, bass, and drums), he led numerous groups of varying sizes throughout his career. Despite the superlative quality of the music, Monk's recordings for solo piano are scarce.
