In July 1964, Miles Davis toured Japan for the first time, performing three known concerts with tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, recommended by Tony Williams. Rivers replaced George Coleman, who had left the quintet earlier that year. These Japan shows remain the only recorded collaborations between Davis and Rivers.
