Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy showcases Josh Tillman at his most ambitious and sharply observant, blending dark humour, empathy, and cultural critique across a sprawling 75-minute album. Known for his enigmatic persona and “intimately berserk” performances, Tillman uses Pure Comedy to explore modern life with wit, vulnerability, and unsettling insight.
Written largely in 2015 and recorded live to tape in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Jonathan Wilson, the album pairs classic songwriting with rich orchestral arrangements from composer Gavin Bryars. The result is a bold, expansive record that captures Father John Misty’s unique balance of satire, sincerity, and emotional depth.
