Father John Misty is Josh Tillman, who has released solo work since 2003 and drummed for Fleet Foxes (2008–2011). His 2012 album Fear Fun, now reissued by Sub Pop, was born from a dark period of depression in Seattle. After moving to a Laurel Canyon treehouse, Tillman overcame his creative block with help from producer Jonathan Wilson and others, creating an album blending influences from Waylon Jennings to Arthur Russell. Featuring Tillman’s rich, Orbison-like vocals and lyrics mixing wit, philosophy, and raw emotion, Fear Fun is a darkly playful and unrestrained expression of his unique vision.
