Year of the Monkey is the second chapter in Fucked Up’s ambitious trilogy, continuing the cosmic journey of Monkey and Good Goat after Year of the Goat. Once again featuring vocal performances from Damian Abraham and Tuka Mohammed, the album also includes an expansive cast of guest contributors such as Keith Morris, Walter Schreifels, Dan Bejar, and Jake Bannon.
Musically, the album pushes the band’s experimental scope even further, blending dense shoegaze textures, proto-metal, hardcore, psychedelia, prog, and classic heavy rock into a sprawling four-sided composition. Recurring musical themes evolve alongside the story’s emotional arc, reflecting the turmoil, danger, and self-discovery faced by its protagonists.
Inspired by the 16th-century Chinese classic Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en, Grass Can Move Stones follows Monkey and Good Goat through a surreal universe of gods, creatures, and existential trials — while also mirroring the band’s own 25-year creative evolution.
