Masterminded by George Clinton, Funkadelic blended rock, psychedelia, and soul to become a key part of the P-Funk empire and a major influence in funk’s evolution. Their 1979 album Uncle Jam Wants You was more militant than One Nation Under A Groove, aiming to “rescue dance music from the blahs.” It features the 15-minute hit “(Not Just) Knee Deep,” which topped the US R&B charts in edited form, and heavily influenced hip-hop, especially Uncle Jamm's Army. The album’s cover, inspired by the “Uncle Sam Wants You” poster, shows Clinton in a Huey Newton pose. This was Funkadelic’s first album since 1972 without Pedro Bell’s cover art, though he contributed to the interior.
