Public Service Broadcasting’s fourth album, Bright Magic, is an ambitious, three-part sonic portrait of Berlin. Moving beyond their usual electronic rock, it uses sparse samples and impressionistic soundscapes inspired by Walter Ruttman’s 1928 tape-artwork Wochenende. Created during J. Willgoose’s 2019-2020 Berlin residency, the album blends sound archaeology with modern influences like Bowie and Depeche Mode. Featuring guest voices like Blixa Bargeld and Andreya Casablanca, Bright Magic celebrates Berlin—and, more broadly, cities as vibrant hubs of culture, community, and idea exchange.
