It’s easy to dismiss Midian for its over-the-top goth bombast, pretentious mix of Carl Orff and Obituary, prog-metal lapses, and campy J. K. Potter artwork inspired by Nightbreed. Yet despite this, Cradle of Filth deliver engaging, often theatrical music, with Dani Filth’s lyrics occasionally echoing John Keats and Lord Byron, and moments reaching the operatic scope of Laibach and Lacrimosa—hinting at a potential gothic masterpiece rivaling First and Last and Always.
