Released in 1988 when Death Metal was still emerging, In Battle There Is No Law! by Bolt Thrower quickly made an impact in the underground. Alongside early genre releases like Scream Bloody Gore by Death, Scum by Napalm Death, and Season of the Dead by Necrophagia, it’s widely regarded as one of the earliest Death Metal records.
The 8-track, 28-minute album is Bolt Thrower’s rawest and most primal work. Its rough production and strong Crust Punk influences contrast with the more groove-focused style the band later developed. The aggressive songwriting, harsher vocals from Karl Willetts, and war-themed lyrics give the album a unique, unfiltered energy that distinguishes it within Bolt Thrower’s discography.
