Atlantis Ascendant is the fifth studio album from the Sheffield symphonic black metal band, released in 2001 through Nuclear Blast. Its epic, Lovecraftian concept follows fictional 19th-century archaeologist and adventurer Professor Caleb Blackthorne III as he searches for evidence of humanity’s ancient origins, ultimately descending into madness and death. Musically, the album continues Bal-Sagoth’s blend of symphonic black metal, death metal and grandiose storytelling, with Atlantis Ascendant also marking their first partial use of digital recording technology.
