Formed in Great Yarmouth in 1990, Catherine Wheel stood apart from the grunge and Britpop scenes, often labeled shoegaze but defying easy categorization. Featuring Rob Dickinson, Brian Futter, Dave Hawes, and Neil Sims, the band gained critical acclaim and even opened for a then-emerging Radiohead. Their 1993 album Chrome, produced by Gil Norton and recorded at Pink Floyd’s Britannia Row Studios, marked a bold evolution—layered, experimental, and emotionally intense. With artwork by Storm Thorgerson and tracks like the haunting “Fripp,” Chrome remains a cult alt-rock classic, often compared to a precursor of Muse’s grand ambition.
