Before “goth” was a term, Xmal Deutschland—a fierce all-female band from Hamburg—embraced the DIY punk spirit despite little musical experience. Their 1981 debut, Schwarze Welt, introduced a haunting, intense sound marked by venomous German vocals and raw synths, quickly making them key players in the emerging dark scene. Rejecting traditional norms, their 1982 single Incubus Succubus became a post-punk classic, blending restless guitars and eerie vocals with militant dance beats, solidifying their place beyond the Neue Deutsche Welle movement.
