Out in the Storm is Waxahatchee’s most autobiographical and honest album, marking Katie Crutchfield’s reawakening and exploration of control, flaws, and sonic freedom. Recorded mostly live with producer John Agnello and a tight band including her sister Allison, the album delivers a fuller, guitar-driven sound. Crutchfield’s voice moves between grace and strength, with raw, unapologetic lyrics on tracks like “Hear You” and softer, melancholic moments like “Fade.” The atmospheric “Sparks Fly” offers a rare glimpse of self-love and redemption, reflecting themes of self-preservation and reclaiming autonomy.
